Underground dates: new fast food for the young?

(CRIENGLISH.com )
Updated: 2006-11-01 14:33

A recent speed-dating session arranged for 30 Shanghai office workers
that took place on the platforms of the city's underground system has led
to media comments on what a date should be like in modern society.

The speed-dating session gives the 15 male and 15 female participants
just 20 minutes to chat and get to know each other before moving on to
the next potential partner. A commentary in the Beijing Youth Daily says
this new dating concept is creative and romantic. It represents young
people's expectations of having a simple lifestyle.

At the same time, however, the article criticizes the event, calling it a
"fast-food game." It doubts whether such short exchanges between people
can lead to a serious relationship. It also argues young people should
dedicate more time to their personal affairs.

The newspaper also assesses burdens from life, work, family and changing
environments are all the factors leading to such a lifestyle shift.

Chinese Class - Streep makes The Devil Wears Prada a must see

ENTERTAINMENT / Review

Streep makes The Devil Wears Prada a must see

By Jana Yang (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2006-09-29 19:38

Ignore critics who call The Devil Wears Prada a chick flick. Meryl
Streep's stunningly subtle performance as super-diva Miranda Priestly
makes it more of a hit than a miss on great extent. Streep shines in this
devilishily funny movie.

The most fashionable movie of the summer, based on the Lauren
Weisberger's best-selling novel, "The Devil Wears Prada," brings light
humor and great actors to the big screen.

Weisberger wrote the book on her experience working for Vogue and also
about the editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. The Devil Wears Prada tells the
story of Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a recently graduated journalism
major who is applying for the job of second assistant to Miranda Priestly
(Meryl Streep), the editor of Runway magazine. Runway is the most
influential fashion magazine in the industry, and no one wields more
power than Miranda. She is revered as a goddess by co-workers and
competitors alike. As Andy was told repeatedly, if she survives a year,
she'll be able to get a job at any magazine.

Streep proves that she is the undisputed queen of all actress by acting
she-devil in this movie. Streep brilliantly performs the role of Miranda
Priestly, a fashion icon and dominant editor-in-chief of "Runway." In the
movie, she has thin lips, snow white hair and piercing eyes. She speaks
slowly with a soft voice but has the presence of a diva.

Meryl Streep gets top billing but has less screen time; but nevertheless,
together with the great team of actor, her performance makes the movie
believable and interesting to watch from beginning to the end.

Miranda Priestly is a demanding editor who settles for nothing short of
perfection. She expects it from everyone connected with the magazine and
in her life. She has all at her control and call without ever raising her
voice. She strikes fear in her employeees. She is impeccably coiffed and
dressed in haute couture. The wardrobe is beyond beautiful for the entire
cast.

Andy knows bringing coffee and answering Miranda's phone is not going to
be as easy as it looks. In the world where Jimmy Choos shoes are a must,
size six is the new size 14 and belts actually matter. The job turns out
to be a nightmare and Andy soon realizes that all the people around
Miranda sooner or later become slaves of her demands. People schedule
their lives around Miranda's wants and needs.

Streep's Miranda is something slightly else, complex and compelling.
Though her outfits and superciliousness are as outrageous as everyone
else's, Miranda tends to speak quickly and quietly, to assume her
supremacy even as she's vulnerable.

Streep invests her Miranda with the brains, ambition and cold blood to
stay on top of what the saucer-eyed Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) sees as a
frivolous fashion rag but others, including the world's top designers and
the head of the publishing company Elias-Clark, know to be a major cash
cow, and therefore sacred.

Contrasting with Streep's role in her past film works, this time, she
brings us a big surprise and leaves me speechless. Streep shows a
controlled, icy, methodical performance, one that makes those sitting in
the audience tremble with fear every time the editor dismisses someone
with a quiet, almost polite, "That's all." Her icy features are brushed
and combed into a mask of slick professionalism, and she plays it
murderously chilly. Streep is almost guaranteed to win yet another Oscar
nominations I think.

I enjoyed the film, despite the whiny final half hour and the artificial
conclusion. If you enter the cinema, you'll also find the moive
delicious. Of course, Streep's strong performance is unable to be ignored.

Learn Chinese - Swing along Latin dance tide

Swing along Latin dance tide
(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2006-10-09 10:30

Autumn is a good season for dieting and exercising, as there is a
week-long National Day holiday to take advantage of, and only exercise
will help to get rid of the autumn weariness.

Latin dance has become the rage this autumn in Guangzhou for its
elegance, excitement and charm.

Dance classes have long been a most important part of sports clubs in
Guangzhou, and Latin dance is always among the hottest. However, it is
even hotter this year, for with its forceful rhythm, it can make
exercising a real art and a full display of one's personal charm and
skill.

Some even say that Latin dance is also a good way of relieving oneself of
one's pressures and delivering one of one's displeasure, its free style
showing people's passion for an unrestrained life, not to mention that
dance is a good way of communication, too.

Famous actors' and actresses' favor for Latin dance also boosts its
booming.

Move your body, let's show our love of life by dancing!

Learn Mandarin online - Low necklines top Emmys fashion

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

Low necklines top Emmys fashion
(AP)
Updated: 2006-08-29 15:14

Eva Longoria

It would've been amazing with a little less stuff TV's top stars showed
off their assets in a big, bare way as low-cut V-necks and halter tops
dominated the red carpet at Sunday's 58th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in
Los Angeles.

Other fashion flashes: purple, red and white were the top color choices;
metallic beading drew eyes to all the right places; and soft, sexy,
piled-high hairdos helped actresses keep their cool on an unusually hot
night.

The cast of 'Grey's Anatomy' wore just about every trend and are sure to
garner a lot of buzz. Katherine Heigl wore a beaded glamour gown in a
nude color with an open neck and keyhole back by Escada, and Ellen Pompeo
chose a strapless bustier-style gown in purple designed by John Galliano
for Christian Dior.

Sandra Oh's asymmetrical light purple gown by Vera Wang had a soft
cascade of ruffles around the V neck that the actress offset with chunky,
funky necklaces.

'I look like a czarina -the last of the Romanoffs with a little Run-DMC,'
Oh said on the red carpet.

People magazine style director Susan Kaufman said she loved the Wang
dress but thought Oh overdid the accessories. 'It would've been amazing
with a little less stuff,' she said.

There were bona fide fashion supermodels outside the Shrine Auditorium as
Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks represented their reality shows. Banks' Georges
Chakra gown was valued at $50,000, and she wore $3.5 million in Chopard
jewelry to complement it. She went to Paris for the fitting of the
glamorous black lace, one-shoulder gown with a deep V cutout that was
entirely handmade. 'A dress is a dress is a dress. It's all about how
it's made,' Banks said.

Klum also was in a one-shoulder dress. Hers was a draped red gown by
Michael Kors that clung to her pregnant belly.

Klum's husband, Seal, was in the uniform of most men on the red carpet _
a black suit, white shirt and regular tie. His was particularly skinny.

Jeremy Piven stood out from the crowd in an ascot but it was hardly an
outstanding look.

Leah Rimini did the one-shoulder thing, but her Versace gown was purple
and had subtle sparkles. Evangeline Lilly's Versace dress was purple with
all-over, crisscross pleats.

'I loved Evangeline Lilly and Ellen Pompeo,' said People's Kaufman. 'They
were almost twins in their dresses. I loved the simplicity and color _
and they're pulling out fall trends.'

Jaime Pressly wore a custom-made Badgley Mischka beaded amethyst
chantilly lace fishtail gown that she accessorized with 19th-century
diamond jewelry by Fred Leighton.

Cheryl Hines selected a purple shantung gown by Chakra with a high neck
and sheer back dotted with jeweled embroidery.

The opposite of Hines' gown was Virginia Madsen's. Her black lace gown by
Kevan Hall showed a lot of cleavage with its plunging neckline but the
rest of the dress was demure and almost sweet.

Kyra Sedgwick said she was going for a Golden Age style. She wore a dove
gray strapless organza gown by Giorgio Armani Prive with raw edge
details. 'I thought it was beautiful and I feel really comfortable in it.
I can actually breathe.'

Mariska Hargitay showed off her post-baby figure in a formfitting
Carolina Herrera black lace gown with embroidered flowers down the
middle. (Hargitay's son is 8 weeks old.)

Chinese Character - "Seeing Shoes" threaten Guide Dogs' jobs

"Seeing Shoes" threaten Guide Dogs' jobs
(CRI)
Updated: 2006-08-08 09:35

Guide dogs may soon be out of a job thanks to a high-tech set of glasses
and shoes invented by scientists to help blind people navigate the
trickiest of terrain.

Researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University say the glasses and
shoes, which have a built-in computer, detect objects within close
proximity through echo location then send a vibrating warning to the
wearer.

"Ultrasonic waves are sent out and when they bounce back they are
interpreted by a receiver, Research Institute of Innovative Products and
Technologies Director Wallace Leung Woon-fong, told Hong Kong's Sunday
Morning Post.

"Once an obstacle is detected the shoes will vibrate, perhaps increasing
in intensity as the obstacle gets closer," he added.

The shoes will use GPS (Global Positioning System) to tell the wearer
where he is and which direction he is going in.

"The shoe will be able to detect steps, holes in the road and obstacles
within a 5-centimetre vertical distance," Leung said.

The innovations are based on the award winning "electronic bat ears"
sonic glasses developed by the university's Professor He Jufang, which
use similar technology to relay information such as size and distance of
an object to the wearer.

But some blind people have expressed reservations about the inventions.

"There are so many bumps in Hong Kong's roads. If I wear the shoes I will
end up shaking and vibrating all day," said Chow Wing-cheung.
