'Rush Hour 3' debuts No. 1 at box office

Updated: 2007-08-13 08:57

People rushed to theaters to see the buddy cop comedy "Rush Hour 3,"
making the last of this summer's big budget Hollywood films the top movie
at the weekend box office.

The film from New Line Cinema took in $50.2 million according to studio
estimates, enough to push last week's top film, "The Bourne Ultimatum,"
into second place with $33.7 million.

"Rush Hour 3" did not do as well as its predecessor, "Rush Hour 2," which
took in $67.4 million when it was released in 2001. But it was the sixth
"threequel" of the summer to open as a weekend's top film and it ranks as
the fourth best August opening on record.

"We really never felt we were going to get where the second one was,"
said David Tuckerman, head of distribution for New Line. "The competitive
landscape has changed dramatically in the six years since the last film.
We figured we'd be in the 50's and that's where we are."

"The Bourne Ultimatum" crossed the $100 million mark in its second week
in theaters. And with "The Simpsons Movie" coming in third with $11.1
million, for a three-week total of $152 million, Hollywood might be
looking at its first $4 billion summer.

"We've been riding a wave of momentum that started with 'Transformers' in
July," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By
Numbers. "We already stand at $3.6 billion at the box office. The $4
billion summer, once thought an impossibility, is definitely within
reach."

The summer movie season runs from the first weekend in May through Labor
Day.

No other blockbuster films are scheduled this summer. But next week's
opening film, "Superbad," is from the same team that made this year's hit
comedy "Knocked Up" and could do well, Dergarabedian said.

This weekend's top 12 movies grossed 37 percent higher than the top dozen
on the same weekend last year. So far this year, box office revenues are
up 6.6 percent to $6.324 billion and attendance is up 1.9 percent.

The other film opening this weekend, Paramount's "Stardust," a
well-reviewed adult fairy tale starring Michelle Pfeiffer, didn't fare as
well. It took in $9 million, good enough for fourth place behind "The
Simpsons Movie," but not as much as might be expected for a film with a
cast that included Robert DeNiro, Peter O'Toole and Claire Danes.

The movie's theme made it difficult to market in a 30-second TV spot,
said Rob Moore, Paramount's head of worldwide marketing and distribution.

"When you make an original movie, it's always very challenging to be able
to communicate to your audience what the genre is," Moore said. "These
movies tend to be driven by word of mouth and home entertainment."

Moore said it is expected to do better in international markets. The
movie, which cost about $70 million to make, will be rolled out in Europe
and other markets in October.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian
theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be
released Monday.

1. "Rush Hour 3," 50.3 million.

2. "The Bourne Ultimatum," $33.7 million.

3. "The Simpsons Movie," $11.1 million.

4. "Stardust," $9 million.

5. "Underdog," $6.5 million.

6. "Hairspray," $6.4 million.

7. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," $5.9 million.

8. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," $5.4 million.

9. "No Reservations," $3.9 million.

10. "Daddy Day Camp," which opened Wednesday, $3.3 million.

Study Chinese - Parking-lot fender bender for Britney

Parking-lot fender bender for Britney

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-10 09:01

Oops, she dinged it again. Paparazzi took pictures and videos of a
puppy-toting Britney Spears steering her car into another one as she
tried to turn into a spot in a Studio City parking lot. Then assessing
the damage to her own car only. Then heading off to shop.

But the tale of the tape made it clear to the owner of the parked car
just who it was who scraped up her silver Mercedes-Benz.

Kim Robard-Rifkin, 59, told the entertainment Web site CelebTV.com on
Wednesday that nobody from Spears' camp had contacted her about the
damaged car.

"It's sad because I was really hoping she'd step up and be a mensch, be a
human being," Robard-Rifkin said. "It was simply like my car didn't
matter to her, my inconvenience didn't matter to her."

A video on CelebTV.com, taken Monday, shows the 25-year-old pop star
(with a puppy on her lap) attempting to park her black convertible and
hitting the adjacent car.

Robard-Rifkin, a registered nurse, said she was "sort of amused and sort
of shocked" when she learned it was Spears who hit her car, and figured
she would hear from the embattled entertainer.

"There were obviously a lot of paparazzi there and what kind of person
wouldn't realize that this (would) be on TV and she had to be responsible
and contact me," she said.

"I'm not asking for money. I'm not asking for a new car. ... I simply
want my car fixed, the same as I would fix somebody's car if I had done
that."

Robard-Rifkin filed a police report on Thursday.

An e-mail to Spears spokeswoman at Jive Records was not immediately
returned.

Spears' divorce from Kevin Federline became official on July 30. Since
February, Spears and Federline, 29, have shared joint custody of their
sons, 22-month-old Sean Preston and 10-month-old Jayden James. When the
divorce was finalized, a child custody hearing was scheduled for Aug. 14.

Yelchin sets course for "Trek"

LOS ANGELES?- Director J.J. Abrams is putting together his bridge crew
for the 11th film in the "Star Trek" franchise.

Anton Yelchin, whose recent credits include "Alpha Dog," is in
negotiations to play Pavel Chekov, the Russian-born navigator of the USS
Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk.

Yelchin, similarly Russian-born, will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard
Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way in
New York and London for Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's
villain and the Federation captain. Abrams is expected to sign
bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.

Plot details for the untitled Paramount film are being kept under wraps,
but the story line is believed to chronicle the early days of the
Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy. The film is
scheduled to bow on Christmas Day 2008.

Chekov was played by Walter Koenig on the original "Star Trek" TV series,
and he is a key member of the Enterprise crew.

Britney fails to recognise Beckham

(Aceshowbiz)
Updated: 2007-08-07 14:57

Britney Spears had an awkward moment with Victoria Beckham when they met
at a Hollywood hotel last week.

The troubled singer bumped into Victoria and her husband David at the
Chateau Marmont last Tuesday, but, despite their highly-publicised move
to LA, she seemed not to recognise the couple.

"Victoria said: 'Hi Britney. I'm Victoria from the Spice Girls'. But
Britney had no idea who she was," an onlooker told The Sun. "She just
looked at her with a vacant and bemused expression and turned and walked
away."

Spears's recent behaviour has sparked fears about her mental state. She
has made headlines for a meltdown during a photoshoot for OK! magazine,
storming out of filming for her own music video, and allegedly
threatening a paparazzi photographer.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are planning to show off the sensual side of
their relationship with a naked photo shoot, a report claims.

The couple are rumoured to be following in the footsteps of friends David
and Victoria Beckham, who posed for a raunchy spread in the style
magazine W last month.

According to Australia's New Weekly, the Cruises want their shoot to be
even steamier and intend to appear nude in one of the pictures.

A friend told the magazine: "They have already started planning some of
the photos. One suggestion they were keen on was a shot of them posing
together in the shower, dripping wet and covered by nothing but steam.

"Tom and Katie really have amazing chemistry. They want to show the world
how much."

Michelle Williams' dad loses challenge to extradition from Australia

SYDNEY - The father of Oscar-nominated Hollywood actress Michelle
Williams on Friday lost a round in his court battle to prevent US
authorities extraditing him from Australia on tax evasion charges.

Stock market high-flyer Larry Williams, 64, whose daughter was nominated
for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in "Brokeback Mountain"
and is the fiance of Australian star Heath Ledger, was arrested in Sydney
in May 2006.

The US Internal Revenue Service alleges that the Virgin Islands' resident
-- grandfather of Ledger's baby daughter with Michelle Williams -- evaded
more than 1.5 million dollars in tax between 1999 and 2001.

Three Federal Court judges Friday dismissed Williams' attempt to restrain
the US and Australian magistrates from taking further steps to extradite
him.

Williams had successfully applied to the Federal Court earlier this year
to have the original extradition application against him ruled invalid.

But the government started fresh extradition proceedings, which will now
continue after Friday's ruling.

Williams has remained in Sydney on a million dollars (800,000 US) bail
since his arrest, with his movements restricted to certain parts of the
city where he had been due to begin a 24-day lecture tour of Australia
and New Zealand.

His daughter Michelle and Australian heart-throb Ledger fell in love
while filming Ang Lee's Oscar-winning 2005 gay cowboy movie and had a
daughter, Matilda, last year.

Thandie Newton reveals bulimic past

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-02 17:12

LONDON?- British-raised Hollywood actress Thandie Newton used to suffer
from bulimia and still bares the scars, she revealed in a new magazine
interview.

She began suffering from the eating disorder when she was 14 and training
for a ballet exam, Newton -- who won best supporting actress at last
year's British BAFTA awards for her role in "Crash" -- told Easy Living
magazine.

"I ate nothing but cottage cheese. It didn't seem so strange. My mum was
a health visitor, so we never had butter in our house, we had Flora. I
had a very healthy, nutrition-conscious upbringing," she said.

The disorder turned into an obsession when she started going out with an
older man, said the 34-year-old.

"We used to go out to dinner all the time, and he'd get so excited about
eating... and it must have been my way of separating myself from him - by
becoming bulimic.

"I would go back to the flat that we were sharing at the time, and I'd
throw up," she said.

Explaining that she suffered from "horrible bulimia for about a year,"
she said: "I've still got the scars on my knuckles from where I put my
fingers down my throat."

Newton, who also starred in "Mission Impossible 2," was born in Zambia
and raised there and in England, where she went to Cambridge University
before embarking on a glittering movie career.

Rolling Stone Keith Richards, cigarette no doubt in hand, is working on a
memoir, the object of a multimillion dollar bidding war that will be
published by Little, Brown and Company in 2010.

"It will be his life's story," Little, Brown publisher Michael Pietsch
said Tuesday. "For nearly 50 years, he has been at the very center of the
vortex of stardom and of entertainment as a cultural force. He's a thread
running through the whole thing."

Richards, the master riffer, legendary partier and songwriting/sparring
partner with Mick Jagger, received $7.3 million for the book, according
to a publishing insider with knowledge of the negotiations. Currently
untitled, the memoir will be written with James Fox, an old friend of
Richards' and author of "White Mischief."

"Keith is working with someone who has been a friend and is an extremely
skilled writer. I know that James has also been talking with people close
to Keith," says Pietsch, who declined to offer specific names or say
whether Fox was talking with members of the Rolling Stones.

Richards and Jagger formed the Rolling Stones in the early 1960s and the
band has stayed together despite numerous feuds, drug problems and the
death of one original member, Brian Jones. Their many classic songs
include "Start Me Up," "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

Richards' life and work have fascinated millions, but his story is hardly
untold. Richards, 63, has been interviewed countless times, speaking
candidly about his music, heroin addiction, love life and battles with
Jagger. He is quoted extensively in "According to the Rolling Stones," an
authorized oral history published in 2003.

"All those interviews have been scattered over decades," Pietsch says.
"To have the story of his own life in one book, there's no experience
like that. And there will be stories he has never uttered before."

Other Rolling Stones have written memoirs, including former bassist Bill
Wyman and fellow guitarist Ron Wood, whose book is due this fall. Jagger
has reportedly tried writing his autobiography, but given up, claiming he
couldn't remember anything of interest.

Pietsch says that he has read some samples from Richards' book, and found
them "delicious."

"The range and type of stories was exactly what you would hope to hear,"
Pietsch says. "The memories and the emotions, people wonder if he
remembers anything, but I wish my memory was that good."

Tom Snyder dies at 71

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-31 08:44

?

Talk show host and newsman Tom Snyder has died in San Francisco from
complications of leukemia, Entertainment Tonight reported on Monday.[AP]

Veteran talk show host Tom Snyder, whose idiosyncratic interviewing style
bemused and annoyed late-night TV viewers during three decades, has died
after a long battle with leukemia, associates said on Monday. He was 71.

The former host of NBC's "Tomorrow" show and CBS' "The Late Late Show
with Tom Snyder" died on Sunday evening at his home in San Francisco,
said his longtime agent and lawyer Ed Hookstratten.

"Tom was a true broadcaster, a rare thing," said Peter Lassally,
executive producer of Snyder's CBS show, in a statement released by the
network. "When he was on the air, he made the camera disappear. It was
just you and him, in a room together, having a talk."

Comedian David Letterman, who took over Snyder's time slot when Snyder
left NBC and later hired Snyder to follow his own show after moving to
CBS, said: "Tom was the very thing that all broadcasters long to be --
compelling."

Snyder gained national fame for hosting "Tomorrow" in NBC's post-"Tonight
Show" spot from 1973 to 1982, with some of his more memorable guests
including former Beatle John Lennon, Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols and
convicted killer Charles Manson.

But a quirky on-air presence -- including frequent digressions about his
personal life and the habit of laughing gustily at his own jokes shared
with an unseen crew -- made him as much the center of attention as his
interview subjects.

"COLORTINI"

Seated cigarette in hand on a simple, darkened set adorned with just two
chairs, he was alternately pompous and self-deprecating. His style
transfixed some viewers, irritated others and was famously captured by
comedian Dan Aykroyd's impersonation of Snyder on NBC's "Saturday Night
Live."

According to the Web site IMDB.com, Snyder conceded that one of the most
embarrassing moments of his career came when he realized 10 minutes into
an interview with rock singer Meat Loaf that he had been calling him
"Meatball."

At the height of his run, Snyder reportedly was considered a possible
future anchor of the NBC Nightly News or a likely successor to Johnny
Carson to host "The Tonight Show." But a reformatting of "Tomorrow" in
the early 1980s failed to catch on and the program was canceled in 1982.

Snyder's time slot ended up going to Letterman.

After several years back on his original medium, radio, Snyder returned
to national television in 1983 with an interview show on cable TV's CNBC,
adopting the catch phrase: "Fire up a colortini, sit back, relax and
watch the pictures, now, as they fly through the air."

Two years later, he landed on broadcast television again to host "The
Late Late Show with Tom Snyder" on CBS, in the time slot following
Letterman's "Late Show" until 1999.

Snyder announced on his Web site about two years ago that he had been
diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia but said his doctors had
assured him his condition was treatable and "nothing to worry about."
Snyder had quit smoking about five years previously.

Snyder was born in Milwaukee and began his broadcasting career as a local
radio reporter before moving into television and anchoring local
newscasts in Philadelphia.

Nicole Richie detours to jail

(E! Online)
Updated: 2007-07-29 17:23

Los Angeles - Nicole Richie's wrong turn is leading her to straight jail.

The Simple Life star was sentenced to four days in jail, after pleading
guilty to driving under the influence of drugs. She has until Sept. 28 to
complete the sentence, which is the mandatory minimum for her offense,
according to Richie's publicist.

Nicole Richie departs the courthouse in Glendale, Calif., Friday, July
27, 2007. [AP]

Richie, who was credited with six hours of time served, was placed on
three years' probation, ordered to 21 days of drug and alcohol-education
classes and fined $2,048 by Superior Court Commissioner Steven K. Lubell.

Lubell told her "not to drive with any measurable amount of alcohol or
drugs in your system" and said the California Department of Motor
Vehicles will determine whether to suspend her license.

"You are very lucky that no one was hurt or killed as the result of this
incident," Lubell said.

Wearing oversize sunglasses and a shapeless, sleeveless black dress, the
petite starlet, accompanied by rocker boyfriend Joel Madden, arrived five
minutes early to court in Glendale, California. She spoke only briefly,
offering a hushed "guilty" when Lubell asked for her plea.

She nodded solemnly when he asked if she understood the terms of the plea
deal worked out between her attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, and
prosecutors.

"The fact of this case, as the court knows it, is pretty scary. Someone
could have gotten killed or injured. The court does not want anything to
happen to you," Lubell said.

"If you continue to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
and someone gets killed, you can be charged with murder, not manslaughter.

"I hope that never, ever happens."

Richie has her choice of serving time in a county jail, like Simple Life
cohort Paris Hilton, or in a city jail, which is cushier but has its own
disadvantages.

"Being in the city jail means that she is not subject to the early
release from the county jail system because of overcrowding, and it also
means that she has to pay for her time in jail versus the citizens of Los
Angeles," said Carolina Lugo of the District's Attorney's Office.

Richie's legal troubles began in December, when she was arrested for
allegedly driving the wrong way on a Los Angeles freeway. Police said she
failed a field sobriety test and admitted smoking marijuana and taking
the painkiller Vicodin before getting behind the wheel of her black SUV.

Richie, 25, pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor count of driving under
the influence at her arraignment hearing in February.

Had she gone to trial and been convicted of the charge, she would have
been sentenced to a minimum of five days in jail and could have faced up
to a year behind bars due to a 2003 DUI conviction on her record.

The case had been set to go to trial two weeks ago, but Holley
successfully petitioned Lubell to postpone her trial date to Aug. 16.

Holley said the delay was needed because an expert defense witness would
be out of the country and unavailable to testify.

The expert, Dr. Terence Sean McGee, was expected to challenge the results
of Richie's drug test.

Legal experts say the stall tactic bought Holley more time to hammer out
a plea deal.

Richie, the daughter of music star Lionel, is due to sit down next week
with Diane Sawyer for a lengthy interview, where the reality star is
expected to hold forth on her legal woes and much rumored but not
publicly acknowledged pregnancy.

An Arizona man who allegedly demanded more than $1 million not to publish
Tom Cruise's stolen wedding photographs has been arrested, the actor's
lawyer said Thursday.

David Hans Schmidt, known for brokering deals involving compromising
celebrity photos and videos, approached Cruise's representatives about
six weeks ago with photos from the actor's Italian wedding last year to
Katie Holmes, attorney Bertram Fields said. The FBI was contacted.

"He was looking for money, lots of money," Fields said.

Schmidt, 47, was arrested by federal agents Tuesday, said FBI spokeswoman
Laura Eimiller, but she said the criminal complaint charging him was
under seal in federal court and she refused to comment.

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles,
said a judge set bond at $100,000. Schmidt was being held Thursday at the
Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, according to jail records.

It was not immediately clear if Schmidt had a lawyer or how he obtained
the photos.

Schmidt has also been trying to auction off Paris Hilton's diaries, along
with photos of her in various stages of undress and other personal items
that had been locked away in a Los Angeles-area storage locker until a
few months ago.

Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, has said the belongings were "illegally
seized" from the storage facility.

Keira's revealing new role

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-07-23 16:13

?

?

Keira Knightley gives her best screen performance to date
in the film of Ian McEwan's novel 'Atonement' [Daily Mail]

There's one constituency of Keira Knightley's fans who won't be able to
see her give her best screen performance to date, in the film of Ian
McEwan's novel Atonement.

For the children who dragged their parents to the Pirates Of The
Caribbean movies, Atonement will be off limits because of its adult
subject matter and gripping, but bloody, scenes of injured WWII soldiers.

In the film, sublimely directed by Joe Wright working from Christopher
Hampton's screenplay, Keira plays university graduate Cecilia who finds
herself passionately in love with James McAvoy's Robbie, the handsome
would-be doctor.

One terrific scene shows McAvoy typing Cecilia a note revealing, in
sexually explicit terms, his truest feelings for her, which he then,
mistakenly, has delivered to her.

Later she and McAvoy make love, keeping their clothes on, but all the
zips and buttons are unfastened, in one of the most erotic moments that's
likely to be seen on screen this year.

As the actress commented to me when I spoke to her on the set: "She's a
grown-up and she does grown-up things. I was 17 when I started playing
Elizabeth in the Pirate films and they were fun, but very much meant for
families.

"Now I've grown up and so have the roles."

I caught Atonement a second time this week and I liked it even more than
I did the first.

It's the best film of the year.

The performances - all of them - are outstanding. Saoirse Ronan, Romola
Garai and Vanessa Redgrave play the three ages of Briony Tallis,
Cecilia's younger sister who, by telling an untruth, sets the two lovers
(Keira and McAvoy) off on a journey of love and tragedy.

Atonement opens the Venice Film Festival at the end of August and then
goes on release here in September, making it more than eligible for the
Golden Globe, Bafta and Oscar awards.

Learning Mandarin - Fashion guide for the season

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Fashion guide for the season
By Belle Zhao (That's Beijing)
Updated: 2006-05-17 17:58

April has been a busy month for Beijing's fashion scene, owing to the
fall/winter 2006 China Fashion Week, which gathered eighteen local labels
and two Italian brands in the Beijing Hotel.

Though these runways lacked the brand name firepower that dazzled at last
December's spring/summer shows, hundreds of fashion hipsters,
journalists, photographers, businessmen and celebrities made it a
standing-room-only-affair. Oddly, the designers showed more autumn and
even summer outfits, while warm winter looks were harder to find than an
RMB 1.20 taxi in Beijing. A casual observer might wonder if the labels
were competing to make the most complicated designs. After all, who's
going to dress themselves like a chiffon funnel cake?

However, complexity can also be good. Case in point: Italian brand
Gattinoni's chiffon shirt with sumptuous ruffles at neckline and front,
tied at the waist with flower buckled belt, matched with knee-length
shorts. The design looks fine because the details are little touches
instead of overwhelming statements. The Gattinoni show, widely acclaimed
as the best collection of fashion week, was also bookended by two special
pieces, one worn by Madonna in 2000, the other by Audrey Hepburn in the
1956 film, War and Peace. The two other highlights of fashion week
spotlighted up-and-coming talent, with student designs from the Institute
of Clothing Technology, and Hanjin International Youth Designers
Competition. Their innovative designs showcased some of this year's key
trends.

It's time to give black a rest, girls, though it's the safest color to
wear and always a staple in our wardrobe. This year is all about white,
which reigned supreme in pretty much every design house, showing up in
suit, pants, dress, and shirt.

For a belle-of-the-ball look, glittery is the fad, from metallic gold to
silver, from sequined twinkle to the slight shimmer of satin. But there's
a fine line between gaudy and glam: if you are wearing an overly sequined
number, you just need to match it with simple bags, shoes and jewelry-and
vice versa.

Waists have made a comeback, so belts are the fad this year, from classic
leather to knitted, from pearl to chic colorful silk belts, which work
well with pants, sweater, blazer or even a long shirt to accentuate the
waistline.

Men borrowing ladies' styles: knitted wool sweaters in bright colors such
as white, blue, red or orange, accessorized with warm wool scarves, pins,
and even flower brooches. Tight-legged pants tucked into boots is another
key look for guys.

Shorts are the must-haves for fall and winter. You'll see them in every
designer's collection. Length ranges from knee to a bit longer.

It's sad that designers never seem to get enough of pointy-toed shoes.
Most local brand names are still producing these sexy, feminine but
painful pointy-toed high heels, which are probably the only trend that
has remained in vogue for more than four years.

Chinese Class - Can HK produce new Jackie Chan?

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

Can HK produce new Jackie Chan?
(AP)
Updated: 2006-04-07 13:38

Jackie Chan

"The Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" action director Yuen
Wo-ping fears that Hong Kong may not be able to produce another Jackie
Chan or Jet Li.

Yuen said Monday Hong Kongers tend to shy away from the hard work that
martial arts training entails.

"More people learn martial arts in China. Hong Kong doesn't have another
generation of action stars. Many people don't want to learn martial arts
because it's too hard," Yuen said on the sidelines of a tribute to action
choreographers organized by the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Chan's action prowess came from training at a Peking Opera school while
Li was a national martial arts champion in China.

Yuen named Chinese newcomer Wu Jing, who played a vicious killer in the
recent "Sha Po Lang," as a promising talent.

He also praised Donnie Yen, who choreographed "Sha Po Lang."

"His fundamentals are really good," Yuen said. "He's willing to rack his
brains in designing new moves."

Yuen, whose Hollywood credits also include "Kill Bill," said U.S.
filmmakers were drawn to Hong Kong action style because they can't
reproduce the same moves.

"Their action sequences aren't as diverse as ours," he said.

Yuen said he is currently working on two U.S. projects, one set in modern
day and the other revolving around Snow White. He did not give further
details.

Monday's tribute also honored Chan, "Hero" action director Ching
Siu-tung, "Martial Law" star Sammo Hung and Lau Kar-leung.

Hung said he's gratified that action choreographers are getting more
credit these days.

"Many years ago action choreographers weren't recognized for their blood
and sweat. Gradually there were prizes recognizing action design.
Gradually we have been comforted," he said.

John Travolta abuses star power

John Travolta

Actor John Travolta abuses his movie fame to gain access to some of the
world's most exclusive restaurants.

The Hairspray star admits he often uses his celebrity status to impress
wife Kelly Preston with dinner dates at top eateries - and loves how
staff do everything in their power to make sure he returns.

He says, "The restaurant thing is a 'gimme'. I don't even have to make
reservations. When I was 21 and first started on Kotter, I went to a
diner and the tab was on them. They said: 'We have a policy to give all
famous people free food.'

"I thought: 'Wow! I can get an apartment near this diner and eat just
about every meal here. I'll be set.'"

I look at China as the planet's hope for going green. Not to put too much

The queue problem

Comments on Zou Hanru's column "Taking your place in the queue" (China
Daily, July 13)

Germans have good manners. If there is a queue at the bus stop, there are
unwritten laws governing who goes first and who goes last: Pregnant women
and elderly people go first, then women with children, then women and
then young men. And those rules also exist in other Asian countries (ie,
Japan).

The problem in China is the education - at school and at home.
Interestingly, unless there are strict rules in public spaces (such as in
Singapore or Hong Kong), overseas Chinese behave in a very similar way to
mainland people (ie, Malaysia).

Harry Potter spoilers proliferate

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-18 09:28

This image, provided in 2007 by Melissa Anelli, shows a portion of the
home page
for Anelli's Web site 'The Leaky Cauldron,' one of several popular sites
on the Internet for fans of the 'Harry Potter' book series by J. K
Rowling.[AP]

In the final days before the world learns whether Harry Potter lives or
dies, spoilers --or those pretending to spoil-- are spreading on the
Internet.

On Tuesday, digital images of what may be the entire text of "Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows," including 36 chapters and a seven-page
epilogue, were circulating among Web users. The book was apparently
photographed as it lay on a carpet speckled with green and red, a hand at
the bottom holding down the pages.

A separate link, http://www.zendurl.com/h/hallows, also displayed a
seven-page epilogue and a 36-chapter table of contents from "Deathly
Hallows," coming out July 21 under ultra-tight security.

Similar information appeared Monday on
http://spoilerboy.googlepages.com/home.

Meanwhile, a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia, has said that he
downloaded hundreds of pages from the 784-page book and U.S. publisher
Scholastic, Inc., has been busy ordering would-be spoilers to remove
their information from the Internet.

"I'm guessing we're in the double digits," says Scholastic spokeswoman
Kyle Good, who added that requiring material to be pulled down did not
mean it was authentic.

"There's so much out there that it's confusing for fans. Our lawyers are
trying to keep down the amount of spoiler traffic that's out there and
clear it from places where fans might be reading."

Anxious about keeping a lock on publishing's ultimate mystery, Scholastic
has refused all along to say whether a spoiler has the real book or not.
According to Good, there is more than one version of the full Potter text
on the Internet. She said the different versions all "looked convincing"
and all had different content from each other.

Leaked copies of other highly anticipated works have appeared online in
recent years, from O.J. Simpson's canceled tale of murder, "If I Did It,"
to "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," which could be
downloaded before the film's release with the help of a file-sharing
program, BitTorrent, an apparent source of the full Potter book.

Author J.K. Rowling, who has said two major characters will die, has
begged the public not to give away the ending to her seventh and final
Potter book. Fan sites such as http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/ and
http://www.mugglenet.com have vowed to keep spoilers away.

"A lot or our tips about spoilers are coming from fans," Good says.
"There's a groundswell from fans who find these links and send them to
us, saying, `I'm not going to look at this, but somebody told me about
it.'"

"I just hope they find these people and punish them accordingly," said
Leaky Cauldron Web master Melissa Anelli. "This is exceedingly wrong and
mean-spirited. Let people enjoy their book, for Pete's sake."

Last month, a hacker who identified himself as "Gabriel" claimed to have
broken into the computer system of British publisher Bloomsbury PLC and
posted key plot points on
http://seclists.org/misc/harrypotterspoilers.html.

Those plot points differ from what is revealed on
http://www.zendurl.com/h/hallows/, which contradicts itself on the fate
of Potter's buddy Ron.

"There is a lot of material on the Internet that claims to come from
`Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,' but anyone can post anything on
the Internet and you can't believe everything you see online," Good says.

"We all have our theories on how the series will end, but the only way
we'll know for sure is to read the book ourselves at 12:01 a.m. on July
21."

Learn Chinese online - Huaiju Opera in Shanghai

CITYLIFE / what's on

Huaiju Opera in Shanghai

(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-17 09:09

Huaiju Opera, new to local opera audiences, is based on songs of farmers,
legends and worship ballads from neighboring Jiangsu Province. The
classic "Legend of the White Snake" and "King of Western Chu" will be
performed this week, writes Xu Wei.

Huaiju Opera based on charming folk tales and household legends in
neighboring Jiangsu Province is still new to Shanghai opera fans. But its
distinctive tunes and performing arts can also inspire one's passion for
traditional Chinese art.

On Thursday promising young Huaiju Opera performer Xing Na from the
Shanghai Huaiju Opera House will present a show with excerpts from the
classics, "Legend of the White Snake" and "King of Western Chu Kingdom"

It will be part of the year-long traditional Chinese opera festival
entitled "Made in Shanghai."

Huaiju Opera dates back to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Inspired by
farmers' folk and worship ballads, Huaiju is rooted deeply in Chinese
folk culture.

Unlike Peking Opera and Yueju Opera whose stories frequently focus on
historical events or romance, household folk tales and legends are common
in Huaiju Opera.

The "Legend of the White Snake," a beautiful and tragic love story, tells
the tale between Xu Xian and his snake fairy wife Bai Suzhen.

Their marriage, however, is plagued by a monk named Fa Hai. To safeguard
her marriage, Bai fights with Fa on Jinshan Hill but unintentionally
brings a flood disaster to nearby residents. Finally Bai is imprisoned by
Fa Hai under the Leifeng Pagoda along the West Lake.

"King of Western Chu Kingdom" is another moving depiction of Xiang Yu, a
hero in Chinese history who commits suicide when he is defeated by Liu
Bang who later founded the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD).

The charismatic 26-year-old Xing, whose teacher is famous Huaiju Opera
artist Xiao Wenyan, has won a few awards for her beautiful vocals.

Initiated in April, "Made in Shanghai" gathers promising young artists of
traditional Chinese art troupes to improve young people's understanding
of these age-old art forms.

Over the coming months, folk music, comedy drama and "pingtan" or
storytelling to music will be presented.

Excerpts from "Legend of the White Snake" and "King of Western Chu"

Eva Longoria banned from having babies

Updated: 2007-07-14 15:17

Eva Longoria has been banned from having a baby with new husband,
basketball star Tony Parker, for at least a year by Desperate Housewives
bosses.

The actress, who plays Gabrielle Solis in the hit US show, got married to
Parker in a ceremony in France on Saturday.

But she has been told she is not allowed to start a family with him just
yet because being pregnant is not in her character's script.

Show boss Marc Cherry announced the news to the couple during his wedding
speech, but Longoria said she does not mind.

She said: "We're fine with that. We want to spend some time with each
other, even though we want kids very much."

LOS ANGELES - "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" worked like
magic in its U.S. box office debut, whipping up $44.8 million for the
biggest Wednesday ever, according to studio estimates released on
Thursday.

"Order of the Phoenix," based on the best-selling novel by British author
J.K. Rowling, also proved an international sensation with an estimated
$29.2 million in ticket sales for a worldwide, one-day haul of $74
million.

The numbers include midnight screenings in the United States and Canada
that brought in $12 million.

The previous record for a Wednesday in the United States was 2004's
"Spider-Man 2" with $40.4 million, according to box office tracker Media
By Numbers.

The latest Potter movie, the fifth in the wildly popular series, has
British boy wizard Harry flummoxed by his mates at the Hogwarts School of
Wizardry and Witchcraft who doubt his near-death battle with the evil
Lord Voldemort.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" was produced and distributed
by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc..

The first four Potter movies, starting with 2001's "Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone," have collectively generated $3.5 billion in worldwide
ticket sales for Warner Bros.

ST. LOUIS - Two people injured when pyrotechnics went awry at Beyonce
Knowles' concert in St. Louis received a surprise emergency room visit
from the singer.

The accident happened Sunday night, just as the R&B star's concert began.
A spokeswoman for Scottrade Center didn't return phone calls seeking
comment, but broadcast reports said pyrotechnics meant for the stage
accidentally spilled into the front row.

Two concertgoers were taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Spokeswoman Kathy
Holleman wouldn't release their names but said the injuries were minor.
Both were expected to make a full recovery.

Soon after the concert, Knowles arrived at the hospital, said head nurse
Darryl Williams.

"She was just very concerned about the people injured in the audience,"
Williams said. "It was unannounced and we kept it very low-key so that
she could spend time with them."

Knowles, 25, met with the fans for about 45 minutes. "I just thought it
was a great thing for someone of her stature to do," Williams said.

A spokesman for Houston-based Music World Entertainment, which represents
Knowles, declined comment.

Knowles' world tour opened in April in Tokyo and runs through early
September. Other stops include New Orleans, Dallas, New York City,
Washington, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

She won a Grammy Award in February for contemporary R&B album for
"B'Day," her second solo album. Knowles won five Grammys for her solo
debut, 2003's "Dangerously in Love." She previously fronted R&B girl
group Destiny's Child.

Knowles starred in the 2006 movie "Dreamgirls."
