Shanxi

15 miners trapped

Rescuers are searching for 15 miners following a colliery fire that
started on Wednesday night in north China.

A total of 36 miners were working in a shaft when the fire broke out at
the Huquangou coal mine in Zuoyun County, Shanxi Province, at 11:00 pm.
Eighteen miners managed to escape. Rescuers found three bodies in the
shaft at 7:00 am on Thursday.

Jiangsu

New port opens

Dafeng Port, in Jiangsu Province, opened over the weekend following eight
years of construction.

With two 10,000-tonnage births the port is will now able to handle nearly
1 million tons of cargo annually.

The port is also building a 50,000-tonnage berth and a 20,000-tonnage
berth for bulk cargo. It is expected the port's handling capability will
be 15 million tons of bulk cargo and 300,000 containers per year by 2010.

Fujian

Flowers on show

The Sixth China International Garden and Flower Exposition opened
yesterday together with a new Garden Show Park in Xiamen, a port city in
Fujian Province.

The exposition has attracted 73 participants from Chinese mainland cities
as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. It will run until next March.

Xinjiang

Russian stable

Andrey Pautov, the missing Russian tourist who was found alive on Friday
in Northwest China, is in stable condition in hospital.

Rescuers airlifted Pautov to the Regional People's Hospital of Hotan, the
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

An initial examination showed Pautov to be in relative good health. He
was found in a mountainous area, 4,000 m above sea level. Pautov had been
reported missing on August 16.

Liaoning

Flies in hides

Entry-exit inspectors in a northeastern city said yesterday that they
have detected live insects in six consignments of cattle hides imported
from the United States.

From July 30 to September 6, inspectors found live cheese flies in
containers holding 260 tons of cattle hides, according to the Dayaowan
Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in Dalian, Liaoning Province.

Cheese flies are insects that could cause temporary intestinal diseases.
